Maui, Hawaii 2oo3

             Photos coming soon!

  • 1.o5.o3 Sunday We flew from SeaTac to Kahului, Maui. After we grabbed our bags, we picked up our rent-a-car and drove to our condo, the Kahana Beach Resort. Later that evening we wandered down to Lahaina's Front Street for dinner at Cafe O'Lei.

  • 1.o6.o3 Monday: We lounged pool/ocean-side then explored more of Front Street. You wouldn't think you could find good pizza in Maui, but BJ's Chicago Style pizza was pretty darn good.

  • 1.o7.o3 Tuesday: We drove the infamous "Road to Hana", starting our journey from Pa'ia after picking up a picnic lunch and a CD tour guide from the Hana Bay Juice Company. For dinner we experienced some teppanyaki cooking at Kobe Japanese Steak House. I thought it would be the best of both worlds. I was excited about finally going out with Joel and getting sushi (a rare treat) while he could still have meat (insert grunt here), but the overall place turned out to be a little too "disney" for my taste. At a place like that, its all about the atmosphere, and it just wasn't happening. I do have to say the steak was pretty good but for that much money the atmosphere should match.

  • 1.o8.o3 Wednesday: We toured Mt. Haleakala National Park and Maui "Upcountry" via a guided tour by Maui Downhill. On our way down the mountain, we stopped at the Protea Farm for some lunch and visited their beatiful garden. After that we biked through Makawao and then onto Pa'ia, all the way to the beach. That evening we dined at Ruth's Chris Steak House in Lahaina. Joel and I disagree about the appeal of serving steak on a plate of sizzling butter. (I'm all for it, and he thinks its a little too much.) We do, however, both agree that serving steak drowned in butter does seem a lot like cheating.

  • 1.o9.o3 Thursday: We chartered a boat for some sport fishing. We went on the NO KA OI III, a 37' Tolleycraft, which was harbored in Maalaea. My biggest accomplishment was not "losing my lunch". Joel's biggest accomplishment was reeling in the only catch of the day. (As it turned out, my rod was the only one that got a bite for the entire 6 hour voyage. Unfortunately, I was a little too sea-sick to fight the fish so Joel stepped in and caught a beautiful tuna!)

  • 1.1o.o3 Friday: We went back to Makawao and Pa'ia (Maui "Upcountry").

  • 1.11.o3 Saturday: After lounging in the sun poolside, we headed to Front Street to finish our souvenir shopping.

  • 1.12.o3 Sunday: Our direct flight from Maui to Seattle turned out to be not-so-direct. After circling over SeaTac for 2 hours, we were diverted to Portland due to fog in Seattle. We stayed at the Holiday Inn near PDX on Hawaiian Airlines' tab.

  • 1.13.o3 Monday: We flew from Portland to Seattle. (This is a flight I wouldn't recommend, as Joel and I figured out it probably takes less time to drive after accounting for check-in time, flight delays, and baggage pick-up.)
